Inverness Caledonian Thistle move a step closer to Europa League qualification with a 2-1 victory over Dundee United.

Inverness Caledonian Thistle have moved a step closer to securing Europa League qualification thanks to a 2-1 victory over Dundee United.

It was the perfect start to the match for the visitors when a long ball forward forced Ryan Esson to come off his line, but a poor clearance fell to Robbie Muirhead, who responded by chipping into an empty net from outside the box.

United were inches away from doubling their lead a few moments later when a Muirhead cross struck the crossbar after leaving Esson helpless.

Inverness improved as the first half progressed, but the away side continued to threaten as the impressive Muirhead tested Esson with a curling effort.

However, the hosts took control with two goals in the space of five minutes to stun the visitors just before the break.

Danny Williams and Marley Watkins combined to create space before the latter delivered a cross to allow Edward Ofere to tap home.

Williams then produced a moment of magic to hand Inverness the advantage as he reacted quickest to a loose ball before sending a half-volley into the top corner from 25 yards.

Inverness could have scored a third early in the second half, but Ofere could only send the ball wide after connecting with another inviting cross from Watkins.

United struggled to enjoy any extended spells on top after falling behind, and Inverness looked comfortable as they pushed for more goals.

An inevitable response from the visitors did arrive but there was no late disappointment for Inverness, who now hold a seven-point advantage over United with three games remaining.
