Ahead of Friday's World Cup clash between Croatia and Brazil, Sports Mole looks back at the previous meetings between the two sides.

For an eighth successive time at a World Cup, Brazil will feature in the quarter-finals on Friday at Education City Stadium when they face the 2018 runners-up Croatia who are in the last eight for the third time.

Tite's side had no trouble getting beyond the last 16, defeating South Korea 4-1 after topping Group G with six points despite losing 1-0 to Cameroon.

The road to the last eight for Zlatko Dalic's men was a lot bumpier as they drew 1-1 with Japan in the round of 16, winning 3-1 on penalties, as they have yet to lose in three penalty shootouts in World Cup play.

Friday will be the third time these teams meet in the finals, with the two previous fixtures taking place at the 2006 and 2014 group stages, as A Selecao won on both occasions.

Brazil have never lost to the Croats in four encounters all-time, boasting a record of 3-1 and defeating them the last time out in 2018, 2-0, when Neymar and Roberto Firmino scored second-half goals.

Croatia have only managed to avoid defeat against the five-time world champions once, in the first-ever game between both nations in 2005.

On that occasion, Ricardinho equalised for Brazil 10 minutes after Niko Kranjcar had given the home team the lead in a match which ended 1-1 at Stadion Poljud in Split.

Following that game, these sides met again less than a year later in the opening match for both teams at the 2006 World Cup in Germany, as Brazil began their title defence with a 1-0 victory thanks to a 44th-minute strike from Kaka.

These nations would go on to face each other in the first game of the 2014 finals when the hosts, Brazil, went behind after 11 minutes to an own goal from Marcelo but stormed back with a brace from Neymar and a 90th-minute strike by Oscar, eventually winning 3-1.
