Celtic boss Brendan Rodgers has revealed that his club are closing in on the signing of 'a big player with a substantial pedigree'.

The Hoops continued their preparations for the new campaign with a 1-1 draw against Austrian side Rapid Vienna on Saturday afternoon.

After the pre-season friendly, Rodgers stated that he was hopeful of bringing "a big player" to the club, and various reports in Scotland have suggested that Chelsea's Charly Musonda is the individual in question.

"He will be a big player if we can get him in and we are hoping that will be concluded fairly soon. That will be great for us. It's been something we've been looking at over a period of six months," Rodgers told reporters.

"If it happens, it will be a great level of quality. Good money will be spent on him. The player I'm talking about is of a substantial pedigree."

Musonda joined Chelsea from Anderlecht in 2012, but the 20-year-old, who made 24 appearances for Real Betis during a loan spell between 2016 and 2017, has never represented the Premier League club's first team.
