Lord Sebastian Coe joins a consortium headed by former Liverpool chairman Sir Martin Broughton who are looking to buy Chelsea, according to a report.

Lord Sebastian Coe is reportedly in line for a place on the Chelsea board should a consortium led by Sir Martin Broughton win the race to buy the Premier League club.

Broughton, a former chairman of Liverpool, is one of an array of candidates who are looking to take advantage of owner Roman Abramovich looking to sell Chelsea at a time when he and the West Londoners are under government-imposed sanctions.

According to PA, Coe, who like Broughton is a Chelsea supporter, will take up a seat on the board should Broughton's bid emerge successful over the coming weeks.

Speaking to the same outlet, Coe said: "I am certain that Sir Martin is the right man to lead Chelsea Football Club into its next chapter. He has an exceptional track record in British business, as well as unrivalled experience in shepherding Liverpool out of a very difficult situation.

"He has the vision, acumen and financial backing to ensure our club's future success, keeping Chelsea Football Club at the top of European football and challenging for trophies. But most importantly, like me, he is a lifelong Chelsea supporter and Shed End season-ticket holder.

"I know that this bid is for the millions of Chelsea fans around the world. We love our club and will always put the fans first."

On Wednesday, the Ricketts Family, who own Major League Baseball team the Chicago Cubs, confirmed that they would be making their own approach for Chelsea, who reached the Champions League quarter-finals later in the day.
