Roland Emmerich has revealed more details about his upcoming disaster film Moonfall.

The German director is known for his epic, apocalyptic projects, having previously had hits with movies such as Independence Day, 2012 and The Day After Tomorrow.

Emmerich's next project is Moonfall - a film in which the moon goes out of orbit and sets course for collision with Earth.

"It starts with NASA realising the moon is out of orbit. At the same time, a guy called Dr KC Houseman (John Bradley) finds out about it," he told Empire magazine.

"It also involves a guy called Brian Harper (Patrick Wilson), a disgraced shuttle pilot who saw something and nobody believes him. And the second-in-command at NASA is Jo Fowler (Halle Berry).

"These three people come together and have to use old space shuttles to go up there and find out what's happening. And craziness unfolds!

"They have to fly inside the moon. At the same time, there's a family trying to survive on Earth. It takes place about 60% on the moon and 40% on Earth."

Moonfall is due for release on February 4, 2022.
