Netflix grows to 224.3 million worldwide subscribers but falls narrowly short of its Q4 target.

Netflix narrowly missed its subscriber target in the final quarter of 2021 but still grew to a new record of 224.3 million subscribers, the company has announced.

The streaming service added 8.3m new subscribers worldwide between October and December 2021, narrowly short of the 8.5m predicted by Wall Street.

The additions took Netflix's total subscriber base to 221.84m - a figure that is predicted to rise to 224.34m in the first quarter of this year.

In a letter to shareholders, the company said: "Even in a world of uncertainty and increasing competition, we're optimistic about our long-term growth prospects as streaming supplants linear entertainment around the world.

"We're continually improving Netflix so that we can please our members, grow our share of leisure time and lead in this transition."

Should Netflix maintain the current levels of growth then it could pass a quarter of a billion subscribers at some point in early 2023.
