The BBC begins a rollout of its first major design refresh in more than two decades.

The BBC has begun to roll out a new more 'modern' design across all of its services as the corporation prepares to celebrate its centenary in 2022.

The move aims to bring together the BBC's many different services in a cohesive, identifiable manner, using "recognisable colours, logos and graphics".

New idents will be rolled out to TV stations including BBC One, BBC Two and BBC Scotland in the coming days, while the refresh of services such as iPlayer, BBC Sounds, Bitesize and BBC Sport will take place incrementally over the next few months.

"How the BBC provides its services has changed dramatically in the last 20 years and it has been a long time since we updated the look and feel of the BBC," explained Kerris Bright, the BBC's chief customer officer.

"Our research tells us that audiences think some of our services look old fashioned and out of date. They want a modern BBC that is easier to use and navigate to find the content they love and enjoy. The more content people find that they love, the more they will get from the BBC.

"So that's what we're doing. Over the coming months we will be modernising all aspects of our services so the experience feels coherent wherever you access our content. We'll join the dots between the different bits of the BBC."

The current BBC design has been in use since 1997.
