Bristol Rugby have insisted that they have not reached a deal with the RFU over Steve Borthwick becoming England's new forwards coach.

The RFU announced earlier this afternoon that Borthwick had joined the national coaching set-up, linking up again with head coach Eddie Jones, who he worked with during the recent World Cup with Japan.

Bristol responded to the announcement on their website, and although they admitted that Borthwick had expressed his interest in joining England, the club maintained that no deal has yet been agreed.

"Bristol Rugby want to make it clear that we have not agreed that Steve Borthwick can leave our employment," read the statement.

"Steve Borthwick is subject to a recently-signed long-term employment contract. Bristol Rugby did not give the RFU permission to speak with Steve Borthwick.

"Bristol Rugby will take all reasonable actions as necessary to protect the club's position and, therefore, will not be making any further statement at this stage."

During his time as a player, Borthwick was capped 57 times by England.
