Stoke City manager Mark Hughes suggests that he is unhappy with Wales's treatment of Joe Allen during the international break after the midfielder returned injured.

Stoke City manager Mark Hughes has claimed that Joe Allen did "too much" during his time with Wales in the international break.

Allen sustained a hamstring injury during the 2-2 draw with Austria last week and was forced to miss the match against Georgia in Cardiff three days later.

The midfielder is also a doubt for Saturday's Premier League clash with Sunderland, and Hughes hinted that he was unhappy with Wales's treatment of the player.

"We're still checking on Joe, he hasn't trained with the group yet. We've just got to be a little bit careful with him; unfortunately he probably did a little bit too much with the Welsh squad," he told the club's official website.

"We would have given him an extra day's rest but he trained with [them] and that's probably compromised him a little bit so they have to be a little bit careful in that regard. We're hopeful that he's going to be okay and we'll have to check on him tomorrow.

"When players go out of the team it's an opportunity for others. We've got a good squad so we've got plenty of options."

Stoke and Sunderland are the only two teams in the Premier League yet to pick up a win this season.
