Southampton attacker Sofiane Boufal vows to make up for lost time after netting the winner on his full Saints debut against Sunderland.

Southampton attacker Sofiane Boufal has revealed his delight after netting on his full Saints debut in Wednesday night's 1-0 success over Sunderland in the League Cup.

Boufal, who joined Southampton from Lille in the summer, made his debut for Claude Puel's side off the bench in last weekend's 1-1 draw with Manchester City in the Premier League.

The 23-year-old capped his first start with a goal against the Black Cats, however, and the Moroccan international is keen to make up for lost time after struggling with injury in the early stages of his time at St Mary's.

"It was a beautiful goal and I'm so happy to score my first goal at St Mary's," Boufal told the club's official website. "I want to say thank you for the support of all the fans who came. I'm so happy to play 90 minutes as it's good for the confidence and for my body. It was a great night for me.

"The spirit is very strong. My teammates are so happy for me because they see me come into the club when I couldn't play. Now they see me score this goal and they're happy for me so I'd like to say thank you to them and to all the medical staff. The goal isn't just for me it's for everyone."

Southampton will attempt to make it back-to-back wins when they welcome Chelsea in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.
