Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho wants to sign a third player of the summer "as soon as possible" after seeing his title rivals strengthen their squads.

Jose Mourinho has reiterated that he is not happy with Manchester United's transfer spending thus far, targeting at least one more player before the new season begins.

The Portuguese made clear earlier this week that more work still needs to be done to strengthen his squad, despite bringing in Victor Lindelof and Romelu Lukaku for a combined £106m.

United have been left frustrated in their pursuit of Inter Milan winger Ivan Perisic, while a defensive midfielder - top of Mourinho's wishlist - has also so far eluded them.

Speaking to reporters after the 2-0 friendly win over Manchester City in the early hours of Friday morning, the United boss said: "When I look to the team and Lukaku, Lindelof, I would like my squad to be here, my whole squad.

"If you manage to get one more player - I'm not even crying for two - if we get one player, as soon as possible. Because we can see Lindelof is in a team, Lukaku is in a team. The understanding between the players, the Paul [Pogba] pass, the way Lukaku holds the ball. The credit of Lukaku and Lindelof to be here on time, the credit is not mine, it is Ed Woodward and his team.

"I thank him for that fantastic work to bring us two very important players for us. But we need a bit more when you see the other teams in the Premier League, like Man City, Liverpool and West Ham, the way they get players, good players, important players. The champions have bought three fantastic experienced players.

"I am thinking about West Ham for the first match of the Premier League. They have got Joe Hart, Chicharito and [Marko] Arnautovic. It looks like they are playing to win the Premier League too. The teams are fantastic in the market. I am waiting for a bit more."

United, who face West Ham United on August 13 in their Premier League opener, have also recently been linked with moves for Marco Verratti, Renato Sanches and Ross Barkley.
