Barcelona transfer roundup: Lionel Messi could return on a free transfer, Xavi's side suffer Robert Lewandowski blow

Sports Mole rounds up the latest Barcelona transfer news, including a possible return for Lionel Messi and an update on Robert Lewandowski's future.

Despite their financial problems, Barcelona are planning a busy summer transfer window, with head coach Xavi said to be keen to add eight new players to his squad for the 2022-23 campaign.

The Catalan outfit will need to make a major sale in order to boost their squad, though, and Frenkie de Jong could be on the way out to allow the club to make signings in the current market.

Here, Sports Mole provides a transfer roundup of the biggest stories involving Barcelona, who finished second behind Real Madrid in La Liga last season.

Barcelona are reportedly open to the possibility of re-signing Lionel Messi on a free transfer in 2023, should the attacker decide against remaining with Paris Saint-Germain.

The 34-year-old left Camp Nou on a free transfer last summer due to the Catalan side's financial issues, with PSG securing his signature on a two-year deal.

Messi managed 11 goals and 14 assists in 34 appearances at club level during the 2021-22 campaign and has already confirmed that he will be spending another season in the French capital.

However, the Argentina international could leave the Paris giants on a free transfer in June 2023, and according to ESPN, Barcelona would find it hard to turn down the chance to re-sign him.

Premier League clubs, in addition to teams from the MLS and Newell's Old Boys, are also said to be keeping a close eye on the developments.

Barcelona would reportedly have to pay in excess of £80m if they want to sign Manchester City attacker Bernardo Silva during this summer's transfer window.

The 27-year-old was again a vital player for the Citizens during the 2021-22 campaign, contributing 13 goals and seven assists in 50 appearances in all competitions.

Bernardo still has more than three years left to run on his contract, but the Portugal international is believed to be unsettled in England, and he continues to be linked with an exit.

Barcelona are said to be huge admirers of the attacker, with head coach Xavi keen to bring him to Camp Nou during the current market.

However, according to The Mirror, Man City will refuse to sell the Portuguese unless they receive an ofer in excess of £80m, potentially pricing the Catalan giants out of a move.

Bayern Munich sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic has said that "things will get calmer" surrounding the future of Robert Lewandowski.

The 33-year-old has expressed a desire to leave Allianz Arena this summer, and Barcelona are viewed as the favourites to sign the Poland international in the current market.

However, Salihamidzic told journalist Christian Falk: "He has a contract until 2023 and we're very happy that he's here. I think things will get calmer now. We discussed about his public statements and that we should all calm down."

Lewandowski - also linked with a move to Manchester United - only has one year left to run on his contract with Bayern.

The centre-forward has won eight Bundesliga titles, three German Cups and the Champions League during his time at Allianz Arena and is believed to be looking for a fresh challenge at this stage of his career.
