Wolverhampton Wanderers rejected the chance to sign recent Liverpool arrival Darwin Nunez prior to his move to Benfica, according to a report.

The Uruguayan's move to Merseyside was confirmed on Tuesday in a deal worth up to £85m - a club-record fee for Jurgen Klopp's side.

Prior to his success with Benfica in Portugal, Nunez was playing with La Liga 2 side Almeria, where he spent just one season before the Lisbon side snapped him up for around £21m in the summer of 2020.

However, the 22-year-old's career could have panned out very differently under alternative circumstances two years ago according to Football Insider, who are reporting that Wolves turned down the opportunity to sign the forward from Almeria.

The report suggests that scouts at the West-Midlands club recommended that the club make a move for Nunez, who had just scored 16 goals in 30 league appearances during his one-year stay with Almeria.

However, Wolves refused to do battle with Benfica that summer and pursued other targets instead.

Nunez scored 48 goals during 85 appearances across all competitions for Benfica during his two-year stay, including 34 goals in 41 games during the 2021-22 campaign.

Such form prompted Liverpool to bring the forward to the Premier League as a replacement for Sadio Mane, who is widely expected to join Bayern Munich during the transfer window.
