Liverpool announce that James Milner will be put on a training programme after feeling discomfort in his quad during the team's recent pre-season friendly.

Liverpool have announced that James Milner will undergo a "specific training programme" after he felt discomfort in his quad during a pre-season friendly.

The former England international, who spent last season in a left-back role, had tests after arriving back at the Reds' Melwood training base on Monday.

The 31-year-old has not been ruled out of the club's upcoming pre-season friendlies, which includes games against Hertha Berlin, Bayern Munich and Athletic Bilbao.

A statement on Liverpool's official website read: "Early assessments show that Milner's problem is not serious, but the number seven will complete a specific training programme this week in order to manage his availability to Jürgen Klopp before re-joining his teammates in their full pre-season schedule.

"At this stage, Milner is not ruled out of any of those matches, but decisions on his selection depend on his recovery and will be taken on a game-by-game basis. The club's vice-captain was substituted late in the opening period against the Foxes in the Premier league Asia Trophy final after feeling discomfort in his quad."

Milner's position in the team could come under threat this season following the arrival of Andrew Robertson from Hull City.
