Former Liverpool striker Michael Owen claims that the Reds are still the best team in Europe after their 1-0 loss to Real Madrid in the Champions League final.

Former Liverpool striker Michael Owen has boldly claimed that the Reds are still "the best team in Europe" in spite of Saturday's Champions League final defeat to Real Madrid.

Jurgen Klopp's side were on top for large periods against Los Blancos at the Stade de France in an encounter which kicked off 36 minutes later than intended following ugly scenes of unrest outside the ground.

However, Liverpool simply could not find a way past an inspired Thibaut Courtois, who made nine saves during the 90 minutes, and Real had a goal controversially ruled out for offside at the end of the first half.

Vinicius Junior was on hand to open the scoring for Carlo Ancelotti's side on the night, and Liverpool could not find a way back into the game as Real won their 14th continental crown.

Owen is still of the belief that the Reds are at the top of the continent, though, telling BT Sport: "Liverpool are still the best team in Europe," after Saturday's loss.

Liverpool legend and current Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard also expects his former side to recover quickly, adding: "Liverpool will bounce back. They will dust themselves down and go for everything next season.

"I don't think Liverpool did anything wrong. 24 shots - it was just one of those days. Ancelotti got his tactics spot on tonight."

During the final, Liverpool released a statement requesting a formal investigation into the sickening scenes involving supporters prior to kickoff, labelling the incidents "unacceptable".
