Chris Sutton says that Jose Mourinho "let himself down" towards the end of his time as manager of Chelsea.

Former Chelsea striker Chris Sutton has claimed that Jose Mourinho "let himself down" towards the end of his second tenure in charge of the club.

Following a run of nine defeats from their opening 16 Premier League matches this term, the Blues announced this afternoon that they had parted company with the Portuguese boss, who has guided the club to eight trophies during two separate spells.

In the wake of Monday's 2-1 defeat at the hands of Leicester City, the 52-year-old stated that he felt "betrayed" by his players, while a number of his other interviews of late have been heavily scrutinised.

"The writing was on the wall after his interview on Monday night. He certainly hasn't covered himself in glory this season with his behaviour," Sutton told BBC Sport.

"Previously he was perceived as intelligent, charming and witty but some of his antics this season he has really let himself down."

Guus Hiddink is the early favourite to replace Mourinho at Stamford Bridge.
