Chelsea vs. French clubs at Stamford Bridge

Ahead of their must-win clash with Paris Saint-Germain tonight, Sports Mole looks back over Chelsea's five previous home meetings with French clubs.

If Chelsea are to continue in this season's Champions League, they must overturn a 3-1 deficit against Paris Saint-Germain at Stamford Bridge tonight.

PSG's visit to West London will see the Blues play host to a French club for the sixth time in their history.

Below, Sports Mole has looked back on how Chelsea have fared in their previous five meetings with Ligue 1 sides.

1. Chelsea 1-0 Marseille, March 2000

Marseille, who included future Arsenal midfielder Robert Pires in their starting linuep, were the first French visitors to Stamford Bridge in the second group stage of the competition. L'OM won 1-0 at the Stade Velodrome, but Chelsea responded in the return fixture courtesy of Dennis Wise, who benefited from a Gianfranco Zola knockdown to beat Stephane Trevisan.

2. Chelsea 2-2 Monaco, May 2004

Having lost the first leg of this semi-final 3-1, the odds were stacked against Claudio Ranieri's Chelsea reaching the final. However, within 43 minutes, goals from Jesper Gronkjaer and Frank Lampard had the Premier League side advancing through on the away goals rule. It didn't last, though, as goals from Hugo Ibarra and Fernando Morientes sent Monaco through to a meeting with Porto and Jose Mourinho.

3. Chelsea 0-0 Paris Saint-Germain, November 2004

Didier Drogba helped himself to a brace as Chelsea recorded a 3-0 win from their trip to the French capital earlier in the group stages, but they couldn't repeat that feat in the reverse fixture. In a game of few chances, neither side was able to break deadlock, although the point went a long way to Mourinho's men booking their place in the knockout stages.

4. Chelsea 4-0 Bordeaux, September 2008

Having lost the previous campaign's final to English rivals Manchester United on penalties, Chelsea got their quest for European glory back underway with a resounding win over Bordeaux. Lampard, Joe Cole, Florent Malouda and Nicolas Anelka all found the back of the net against a team that were managed by current PSG head coach Laurent Blanc.

5. Chelsea 2-0 Marseille, September 2010

After winning their opening group outing against Slovakian side Zilina, Chelsea made it two wins from two as they dispersed of Marseille. Captain John Terry scored in the seventh minute as he flicked the ball in at the near post, before Anelka scored from the penalty spot after the restart. On the bench for Marseille was Cesar Azpilicueta, who signed for Chelsea in the summer of 2012.
