Result: Australia smash world record to beat England to gold

Australia smash Team GB's world record in the men's 4000m team pursuit final to win gold at England's expense at the Commonwealth Games.

Australia have smashed the men's 4000m team pursuit world record on their way to winning gold at the 2018 Commonwealth Games.

The host nation had set the standard in the heat by breaking the Games record, but they reached even greater levels in the finals to comfortably beat arch-rivals England to gold.

England eventually finished more than 5.5 seconds adrift of Australia, whose final time of 3:49.804 saw them smash the record set by Team GB at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

The quartet of Leigh Howard, Sam Welsford, Kelland O'Brien and Alex Porter showed no signs of letting up in a remarkably consistent performance which saw them steadily increase their lead before tearing away from England in the final kilometre.

England's team of Kian Emadi, Ethan Hayter, Oliver Wood and Charlie Tanfield did pick up a silver medal, though, while Canada pipped Wales to the final podium place in the bronze-medal race.

Australia's success saw them complete a golden double on the night, with the women's pursuit team also finishing top of the podium in style with a Games record.
