Sebastian Vettel fastest in Bahrain GP qualifying, Lewis Hamilton penalised

Vettel fastest in Bahrain GP qualifying
Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel claims pole position at the Bahrain Grand Prix while Lewis Hamilton is pegged back by a penalty.

Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel will take pole position in Sunday's Bahrain Grand Prix after registering the fastest time in qualifying.

The German pipped teammate Kimi Raikkonen to first place by 0.143 seconds as Ferrari claimed the entire front row during Saturday's main event precursor.

Valtteri Bottas of Mercedes came in third, just 23 thousandths of a second behind Raikkonen after making a two-tenths improvement on his final lap.

The Finnish driver's teammate Lewis Hamilton took fourth place, but will start back in ninth after incurring a five-place drop for an unauthorised gearbox change.

Daniel Ricciardo of Red Bull rounded off the top five, while Toro Rosso's Pierre Gasly defied the odds with an unlikely sixth-place finish.

Kevin Magnussen, Renault duo Nico Hulkenberg and Carlos Sainz and Esteban Ocon completed the top 10.

Elsewhere, it was a disappointing qualification race for McClaren, with Fernando Alonso and Stoffel Vandoorne only managing 13th and 14th place, respectively.
