Novak Djokovic insists that Andy Murray deserves his place as the year-end world number one following a "great" second half to 2016.

Novak Djokovic has congratulated Andy Murray after the Brit secured the world number one spot at the end of the year with victory at the ATP World Tour Finals this evening.

Djokovic and Murray faced a straight showdown for top spot and the season-ending tournament win at the O2 Arena in London this evening, and it was the latter who came out on top with a 6-3 6-4 victory.

Djokovic had looked guaranteed to claim top spot for a third straight year when he beat Murray to win the French Open title in June, but the Serb has won just one tournament since then, while Murray has won Wimbledon and Olympic gold amongst others.

"It's been a fantastic year. Obviously there's a lot to look back to, great highlights, especially in the first six months," he told reporters after his defeat.

"Today we were both part of history, it was an honour to be on the court. Andy is clearly number one of the world, he's the best player.

"He played the best tennis in the decisive moments. I wasn't able to come back. I started playing a bit better but it was too late. I congratulate Andy and his team for a great year."

The defeat also sees Djokovic's four-year reign as ATP World Tour Finals champion come to an end.
