England coach Trevor Bayliss puts down his team's performance on the fourth day of the fifth Test match against India as "one of those days".

England coach Trevor Bayliss has admitted that the players face "a test of character" after their dismal showing on the fourth day of the fifth Test match with India.

Karun Nair hit an unbeaten 303 as India declared on 759-7, leaving England needing to bat out the final day in order to secure a draw in the last contest in Chennai.

Bayliss is quoted by BBC Sport as saying: "India played extremely well and you put it down to one of those days and just hope it doesn't happen too often. Alastair tried everything but you have to bowl to the fields and once India got in it was a fantastic innings.

"It's a difficult day for everyone in the changing room but they will come out tomorrow and it will be a test of their character.

"I'm sure we made some mistakes, we've played some decent cricket but not as good as the India team, who haven't let us into the game."

Bayliss will miss the final day's play as he has an operation on a hernia.
