Dutch football legend Johan Cruyff thanks fans for support in cancer battle

Dutch football legend Johan Cruyff thanks fans for their support after confirming that he has lung cancer.

Dutch football legend Johan Cruyff has given his gratitude to supporters who have wished him well after being diagnosed with lung cancer.

The news was confirmed yesterday after the 68-year-old former Barcelona star learned the extent of the disease.

On Twitter, Cruyff wrote: "Thank you for all your support."

The three-time European Footballer of the Year, who used to be a heavy smoker, underwent double heart bypass surgery in 1991 during his eight-year spell as manager of Barcelona.

Former Real Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti tweeted: "Dear @johancruyff you have always been a winner and so you'll be this time. Best regards."

Cruyff won the Eredivisie title eight times while playing for Ajax.
