British tennis star Heather Watson is knocked out of the Miami Open in straight sets by Simona Halep in the fourth round.

British tennis star Heather Watson has been knocked out of the Miami Open by Simona Halep at the last-16 stage.

Watson missed out on the chance of reaching the quarter-finals of the tournament for the first time as she lost 6-3 6-4 to the Romanian.

The Brit earned an early double break in the first set, but she dropped her own serve in the process and Halep managed to find her stride.

After breaking a further two times, the 2014 French Open finalist took a one-set lead and went a break up in the fifth game of the second set.

Watson managed to snatch serve immediately, but she failed to hold and that was enough for Halep to push on and win the match.

Johanna Konta remains Britain's only representative in the women's side of the tournament.
