Jim Furyk has become just the sixth man in history to card a 59 on the PGA tour round by shooting 12-under par at the BMW Championship in Chicago.

The veteran American made an eagle, a bogey and 11 birdies, the last of which came on the final hole of his round, to move into a tie of the lead with Brandt Snedeker at Conway Farms Golf Club.

He played the back nine first and reached the turn in 28, having made eight birdies, but a bogey at the par-4-fifth - his 14th hole of the day - looked to have denied him the chance of equalling the record.

However, Furyk responded by making birdie at the seventh and then hit a brilliant approach to within three feet at the ninth - his last hole, .

The 2003 US Open winner then sunk his short putt to join Stuart Appleby, Paul Goydos, David Duval, Chip and Al Geiberger in achieving the feat.
