Southampton captain Jose Fonte insists that he is "fully committed" to the Saints following a period of transfer speculation.

Southampton captain Jose Fonte has insisted that he is "fully committed" to the Saints following speculation linking the centre-back with a move away from St Mary's in the summer transfer window.

Fonte, who is currently with the Portugal squad ahead of their 2018 World Cup qualifier with Switzerland on Tuesday, was linked with a move to Manchester United in the latter stages of August.

It had been claimed that the 32-year-old had been unsettled by the speculation, but Fonte has insisted that he is "fully committed to succeed" with the club that he has represented since 2010.

"Once in the national team only national team interviews/talks are allowed hence my 'let's leave that for another time' when asked about questions regarding my own club situation," Fonte wrote on Facebook.

"To make it perfectly clear to everyone that might have some difficulty understanding I am a Southampton player, and proudly have been since 2010, understand that once I step on the pitch with the saints shirt and armband I give my blood, sweat and tears for the club and will always will no matter what you read or think.

"My professionalism means everything to me, and no one can point me a finger about it. I am fully committed to succeed with my 2 teams @southamptonfc and @selecoesportugal Thank you #wemarchon"

Fonte joined Southampton when the Saints were in League One.
