Michael Carrick will take over captaincy duties at Manchester United next season following Wayne Rooney's expected departure to Everton, according to a report.

Jose Mourinho will reportedly hand the captain's armband to Michael Carrick for the 2017-18 campaign, as Manchester United prepare for life without Wayne Rooney.

The long-serving skipper is expected to join boyhood club Everton in the coming days, bringing an end to his 13-year spell at Old Trafford - three of which have been spent as the team's on-field leader.

A new captain therefore needs to be appointed and, according to The Sun, experienced midfielder Carrick is the player who will receive the honour.

Carrick's future at United was left hanging in the balance heading into the summer transfer window, but he has since been handed a one-year contract extension by Mourinho .

The same report suggests that Ander Herrera, voted Players' Player of the Year for the 2016-17 campaign, will be named as deputy captain and take on the role when Carrick is absent from the side.
