Ilkay Gundogan says that Manchester City are motivated to beat Liverpool in Europe after the Merseyside club ended their unbeaten run in the Premier League.

Ilkay Gundogan has claimed that Manchester City are "aware" of why they lost to Liverpool in the Premier League earlier this season.

In January, Liverpool recorded a 4-3 victory over City to end the unbeaten streak of the top-flight leaders, and the two teams have been drawn to face each other in the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

That setback failed to dent City's title hopes, but Gundogan has revealed that Pep Guardiola's side are 'motivated' to get the better of the Merseyside giants at Anfield on Wednesday night.

The 27-year-old is quoted by The Sun as saying: "Obviously, going back to Anfield for the first-leg game is a great motivation for us. Liverpool are still the only team that's been capable of beating us in the Premier League, but we're aware why this happened.

"We're aware of our strengths and we know what we're capable of. We want to prove that in both games."

Teammate Aymeric Laporte has said that City must be "100% focused" to claim a result in the first leg of the last-eight tie.
