Sports Mole brings you live text commentary of the international friendly between Italy and Portugal at the Stade de Geneve.

Portugal claimed their first victory over Italy in 39 years by winning 1-0 at the Stade de Geneve this evening.

Silvestre Varela came the closest to scoring in the first half when his shot was cleared off the line by Andrea Ranocchia.

Italy made a strong start to the second half and Leonardo Bonucci almost broke the deadlock when his effort came back off the post.

Within minutes, Eder arrived inside the six-yard box to slot home Ricardo Quaresma's cross and give Portugal the lead.

In the closing stages, Marco Gabbiadini and Franco Vazquez saw attempts saved by the keeper and Ranocchia blazed wide, as the Seleccao held on to win the match.

Find out how the action unfolded below.

7.00pmHello everyone! We could be in for a mouth-watering clash in Geneva this evening, as two heavyweights of world football collide. It may be billed as a friendly, but there is sure to be plenty of excitement with Italy taking on Portugal.

7.03pmWe'll take a closer look at each team in just a few minutes, but first let me bring you the team news and see who will be starting this evening.

7.06pmTEAMS:

ITALY XI: Sirigu, De Sciglio, Ranocchia, Bonucci, Darmian, Pirlo, Soriano, Bertolacci, Candreva, El Shaarawy, Immobile

PORTUGAL XI: Beto, Vieirinha, Alves, Fonte, Coentrao, Moutinho, Danilo, Tiago, Quaresma, Eder, Varela

7.09pmThat's how our teams will be lining up tonight. Italy manager Antonio Conte has made six changes to the team that played against Croatia. Goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu replaces the injured Gianluigi Buffon, while Andrea Ranocchia and Mattia De Sciglio are drafted into the defence. There are also rare starts in the midfield for Andrea Bertolacci and Roberto Soriano, with Ciro Immobile returning to the attack.

7.12pmThe headline news as far as Portugal are concerned, is that Cristiano Ronaldo does not feature. The Real Madrid star has been allowed to leave for his holidays early, along with Danny, William Carvalho and Bernardo Silva. There are still some big names in the side, with the likes of Ricardo Quaresma and Joao Moutinho both starting, while Silvestre Varela and Eder will be expected to provide the attacking threat.

7.15pmOver the past week, both of these teams have been in action as they attempt to qualify for Euro 2016. Italy travelled to Split last Friday to take on Group H leaders Croatia and they came from behind to earn a 1-1 draw. They did have a goal controversially disallowed by Stephan El Shaarawy prior to conceding, but the result means that they are still well on their way to a top-two finish.

7.18pmPortugal took to the pitch a couple of days later away to Group I's bottom club Armenia and a shock looked on the cards when Marcos Pizzelli fired in a stunning free kick for the hosts. However, Cristiano Ronaldo scored his third hat-trick in three games to inspire his country to a 3-2 win, that has kept them top of their qualifying group.

7.21pmThese teams have met on 24 previous occasions and Italy have won an overwhelming 18 of those games. The Azzurri have actually been victorious in all of the last 10 clashes, with Portugal's most recent success coming way back in 1976.

7.24pmPerhaps rather surprisingly, the two countries have never played each in a major tournament. Most of their meetings have come in friendlies, but they have met six times in qualification for the World Cup and the European Championships. Sticking to form, Italy have won five of those games, losing one World Cup qualifier in 1957.

7.27pmThe players from both teams are now out on the the pitch and we are hearing the national anthems from the two countries. It must be said that the stadium isn't looking too packed at the moment, despite the draw of top class internationals such as Andrea Pirlo.

1 minKICKOFF! We are underway at the Stade de Geneve!

3 minSHOT! Italy have made the more dominant start of the two teams and they create the first chance on goal. They win a free kick just outside the box to the right and Pirlo steps across to take it. Instead of delivering a cross, he looks to catch Beto out at his front post, but the keeper is there to punch the ball to safety.

6 minPortugal are beginning to get on the ball a lot more and they are looking dangerous down the flanks. On this occasion it's Varela who gets free down the left and stands up a cross, but the ball is far too close to Sirigu, who claims with ease.

9 minAside from Pirlo's early free kick, we haven't seen too much in the way of chances. Both teams are taking turns keeping the ball in deeper areas of the pitch, with the attacking players looking rather isolated at the moment.

12 minThe defences of each country are very much on top at the moment and Vieirinha makes a great tackle down the right to stop Candreva from getting in behind. Moments later Eder charges down the left with a strong run for Portugal, before he is finally stopped by the Italian backline.

15 minItaly could have a problem here, as Immobile is down and receiving treatment from the medical staff. He was brought down by Danilo as he charged towards the box and he will be hoping that it's not too serious.

17 minThat foul on Immobile gives Italy a free kick around 25 yards out that Pirlo steps up to take. However, it is not the midfielder's best effort and it deflects off the top of the wall for a corner. I can also tell you that Immobile has made his way back onto the pitch.

18 minCHANCE! It's taken a while, but we've finally seen the first real opening of the match. Bertolacci latches onto a loose clearance just outside the box and he then tries to hammer a strike into the top corner, but the ball ends up swerving just wide of the post.

21 minWe've had another injury problem and this time Coentrao pulls up with a hamstring problem. It doesn't look like he will be able to continue and there's no point risking further injury in a friendly.

24 minSUBSTITUTION: Coentrao had his hamstring strapped up and then made his way back onto the pitch, but he quickly went down again and he looks in real pain. There is no option but to replace him and Eliseu is now coming on to take his spot.

27 minSHOT! El Shaarawy is such a danger when he cuts in from the left and shoots and that's exactly what he does here after a quick break. He drives into the box and looks to bend a low shot into the far corner, but his effort goes just inches wide of the target.

31 minOFF THE LINE! Italy find thmsevles in trouble when Sirigu takes a poor touch from Bonucci's back pass and he loses the ball to Eder. It is then played back to Varela who looks to curl an effort into the corner, but Ranocchia gets back to clear and saves his keeper's blushes.

34 minIt's fair to say that this match has not really sparked into life, despite a couple of good chances for either side in recent minutes. The injuries to Immobile and Coentrao certainly disrupted the play, while a couple of heavy challenges have also played their part in a fractured contest.

36 minSHOT! The Italians have been quite content to play the ball around their back four, but they lose it cheaply with Moutinho being found just outside the box. The Monaco player then drives in a low effort towards the bottom left corner, but Sirigu gets down well to save and hold onto the ball.

40 minAs we edge towards half time, it's Portugal who are seeing the majority of possession. Italy seem happy to allow their opponents time on the ball, as their best moves in the half have come from counter attacks.

43 minThis game definitely feels like an end of season friendly and there is a real lack of intensity. It doesn't help that a few of each team's best players are missing, with Ronaldo certainly the most high profile absentee today.

45 minWe are going to have one minute of stoppage time.

45+1 minHALF-TIME: Italy 0-0 Portugal

8.20pmThe whistle blows for half time and it is currently goalless between Italy and Portugal. The game has never really sparked into life and we have only seen a couple of decent efforts on goal. Hopefully things will change after the break and there are bound to be a raft of substitutions made by each team.

8.24pmLet's take a look at the vital stats from the opening 45 minutes. Italy slightly shaded possession, seeing 53% of the ball, while both teams have had six attempts on their opponents' goal. Varela's strike that was cleared off the line by Ranocchia is by far the closest we have come to a goal.

8.28pmDon't forget that we've got plenty more live coverage of international football to come for you throughout the week. There are also a couple of Copa America games later, with Paraguay taking on Jamaica and favourites Argentina going head-to-head in a very tasty looking clash with holders Uruguay.

46 minPortugal take the kick off for the second half and get the match back underway.

46 minSUBSTITUTIONS: Portugal have made a couple of changes at the break, with Soares coming on for Vieirinha and Adrien Silva replacing Tiago.

46 minCLOSE! Within a minute of the second half Italy come close to breaking the deadlock. A free kick from Pirlo drops kindly to Soriano on the edge of the box and he then curls in a strike looking for the top corner, which ends up heading just over the bar.

50 minOFF THE POST! Once again Italy come close to scoring and it's from another Pirlo free kick. The midfielder whips a great cross into the box that is met by Bonucci, but the defender places the ball onto the post. The rebound is then scrambled behind for a corner, but Portugal easily clear the set piece.

52 minGOAL! Italy 0-1 Portugal (Eder)

52 minItaly may have had the best chances since the break, but they fall behind to a well-worked goal. Eliseu bursts from inside his own half and finds Quaresma down the left. The Porto winger then delivers the most delightful cross with the outside of his right boot into the box and Eder arrives to slot the ball in from just a few yards out for his first-ever international goal.

52 minYELLOW CARD! I can tell you that in the build up to the goal Soriano brought down Eliseu just after he passed the ball to Quaresma and he has been shown a yellow card.

55 minSHOT! Portugal's heads are up now and they come forward again with Adrien Silva leading the charge. He then works some space just outside the box and drills in a low strike, but it ends up going wide of the target with Sirigu left untroubled.

58 minSUBSTITUTION: Italy are going to make their first change of the night, with Vazquez coming on for Soriano to win his second cap.

59 minSUBSTITUTION: There's also a change being made by Portugal, as Carrico is coming on for Alves.

62 minsItaly are seeing plenty of the ball at the moment in their opponents' half of the pitch, but it is breaking down for them in the final third. They just seem to be lacking a bit of invention when it matters most and their more experienced players haven't been at their best this evening.

64 minSUBSTITUTION: It's another change for the Azzurri, with Gabbiadini coming on to replace Candreva.

67 minCLOSE! Italy are pressing for an equalsier and they come agonizingly close to getting it here. Pirlo shows his class by slipping a ball into the box for Darmian. The full back then cuts inside onto his left foot and bends an effort towards the far corner, but it goes narrowly wide of the post.

68 minSUBSTITUTION: El Shaarawy's evening is over for Italy, as he heads off to be replaced by Sansone, who is making his international debut.

70 minYELLOW CARD! Bertolacci is booked by the referee for bringing down Moutinho just outside the box, giving Portugal a free kick in a very promising position.

72 minCHANCE! The impressive Quaresma tries his luck from the resulting set piece, but he can only curl the ball over the bar. He hadn't started a game for Portugal in five years, but he has made a great impact this evening and his assist for the goal was brilliant.

73 minYELLOW CARD! The referee hands out another booking, with Adrien Silva the latest player to go into the notebook for a foul on Vazquez.

73 minSUBSTITUTIONS: Immobile hasn't had the greatest of nights for Italy and he heads off to be replaced by Matri. Pasqual is also coming on and takes De Sciglio's place at the back.

76 minSUBSTITUTION: The changes keep on coming from both teams and Nani is going to come on to replace the Varela.

76 minSUBSTITUTION: It's a final sub of the match for Italy, as Parolo replaces Bertolacci.

78 minIt has been very stop-start over the past few minutes due to the host of substitutions made by the two managers. There's no real pattern of play and we are seeing very little in the way of chances on goal.

82 minYELLOW CARD! Eliseu picks up a card for time wasting. It may be a friendly, but that's the fourth booking we have seen this evening.

85 minItaly are becoming rather frustrated now as another Portuguese player is down and calling for treatment. This time it's Quaresma who is accused of wasting time by the Azzurri and after a long delay he finally goes off to be treated on the sidelines.

86 minSUBSTITUTION: Quaresma is unable to continue for Portugal and he is now replaced by Pizzi.

88 minSHOT! Eder has already scored what looks to be the winning goal this evening and he goes for a spectacular overhead kick from the edge of the box. However, he doesn't make great contact with the ball and sends his strike well wide of the target.

89 minSAVE! Beto has not had too much to do this evening, but he makes an important save to preserve his side's lead. Gabbiadini had worked some room on the edge of the box, before firing in a low strike, but the keeper was there to palm the ball behind for a corner.

90 minThere are going to be five minutes of stoppage time, which will be warmly received by the Italians as they look to salvage a draw.

90+2 minSHOT! The build up play from Italy's forwards hasn't been great this evening, but Gabbiadini does well to slip a ball into the path of Matri. The striker is at a tight angle fires an effort towards the near post, but he can only hammer the ball wide.

90+5 minSAVE! Once again Beto comes to Portugal's rescue with a fine save to deny Vazquz. The midfielder curled in a shot from just outside the box that looked set to find the top corner, but the keeper was there to tip the ball over the bar.

90+5 minCHANCE! From the resulting corner Italy have yet another chance to rescue a draw, as Pirlo's delivery is not dealt with and drops kindly to Ranocchia inside the box, but he can only drill his low effort wide of the post.

90+5 minFULL-TIME: Italy 0-1 Portugal

9.27pmIt's all over in Geneva and Portugal have held on to claim a rare win over Italy. Eder's goal made the difference and has ended Anontio Conte's unbeaten run as Azzurri manager. There was also a pitch invasion following the final whistle and I'm sure that will be investigated by UEFA.

9.30pmRight, that's all we've got time for from Switzerland. Our Copa America coverage is just about to get underway, so make sure you stick around for that. Until next time, Goodbye!
