Forward Olivier Giroud says that his goal for Chelsea against Liverpool was dedicated to David Luiz because the defender has been going through a "tough period".

Chelsea forward Olivier Giroud has revealed why he dedicated his goal against Liverpool to teammate David Luiz.

On Sunday afternoon, Giroud scored the only goal of the game as the Blues registered an important 1-0 victory over the Merseyside giants and one of their rivals for a Champions League spot next season.

Giroud ran to celebrate with Luiz in the dugout, and the Frenchman has said that it was a show of support to a player who has barely featured since the end of October.

The 31-year-old told Sky Sports News: "David Luiz is a good friend, so I was very pleased to dedicate him this goal because he is going through a tough period and he is coming back."

Luiz is currently trying to recover from a knee problem in time to feature in Chelsea's three remaining matches.
