How Chelsea could line up against Grimsby Town

Ahead of Wednesday's EFL Cup tie between Chelsea and Grimsby Town, Sports Mole looks at how the Premier League outfit could line up at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea play host to Grimsby Town in the EFL Cup third round on Wednesday night looking to get their first home victory for the season on the board.

Frank Lampard has witnessed his side fail to defeat Leicester City, Sheffield United, Valencia and Liverpool, leaving the club legend eager to end the winless streak as soon as possible.

However, Lampard will almost certainly make mass changes to his starting lineup for the clash with the League Two outfit as he looks to hand game time to some of his fringe players.

Here, Sports Mole predicts how the West Londoners may line up for the fixture at Stamford Bridge.



CHEXI VS. GRI

Out: Emerson Palmieri (thigh), Ruben Loftus-Cheek (Achilles), Andreas Christensen (knee)
Doubtful: Antonio Rudiger (groin)

Having both come through two second-string fixtures after serious injuries, Reece James and Callum Hudson-Odoi are both expected to be handed some minutes against the Mariners.

While James could start in place of Cesar Azpilicueta, Hudson-Odoi may have to do with a spot among the replacements given the competition for places on the flanks.

Pedro and Christian Pulisic should come into the team, with Michy Batshuayi in line to get the nod over Olivier Giroud in attack.

With Jorginho and N'Golo Kante likely to be rested ahead of Saturday's Premier League fixture with Brighton & Hove Albion, the midfield three could be made up of Mateo Kovacic, Billy Gilmour and Ross Barkley.

Lampard has a number of injury concerns at the back, which should lead to Marc Guehi being handed his debut in the centre of defence and young left-back Ian Maatsen earning a spot on the bench.

Willy Caballero should make his first start of the campaign between the sticks in place of Kepa Arrizabalaga, with Jamie Cumming acting as his deputy for the night.
