Atletico Mineiro drop out of season finale against stricken Chapecoense

Atletico Mineiro rule out playing their final game of the season against Chapecoense due to their opponents losing the majority of their team in a plane crash.

Atletico Mineiro have opted against playing in the last game of the season against Chapecoense out of respect for their opponents, who lost 19 first-team members in a plane crash.

As well as their players, the Brazilian football outfit lost manager Caio Junior and the coaching staff in a tragic accident that resulted in the deaths of 76 people in total.

The flight, which was taking the team to Colombia for the first leg of the Copa Sudamericana final against Atletico Nacional, plunged into a mountainside near Medellin on Monday evening after running out of fuel.

The Brazilian Football Federation called for seven days of mourning, claiming that the final round of Serie A fixtures will be played on the weekend of December 10 and 11.

The governing body suggested to Chapecoense that they should field their youth team, but now Atletico Mineiro president Daniel Nepomuceno has told reporters that his side will not travel for the match and have handed a win to their opponents as a result.

As well as the footballers and coaches, the majority of the cabin crew and 20 journalists died in the tragic crash.
