Birmingham boss Garry Monk hit with one-match touchline ban

The club have appealed against the red card shown to midfielder Maikel Kieftenbeld.

Birmingham manager Garry Monk has been given a one-game touchline ban by the Football Association after being sent to the stands during the 1-1 draw at Brentford.

Monk was dismissed by referee Tim Robinson and was subsequently charged by the FA with allegedly using abusive and/or insulting words towards a match official.

Monk became involved in a melee after an off-the-ball incident between Birmingham’s Maikel Kieftenbeld and Brentford’s Neal Maupay which saw the Blues midfielder sent off.

Birmingham have appealed that dismissal but Monk has accepted his touchline ban, meaning he will miss the Sky Bet Championship match with Rotherham at St Andrew’s on Saturday. Monk has also been fined £2,000 by the FA.

A statement on the club website read: “Monk admitted using abusive and/or insulting words towards a match official in the 66th minute of the game against Brentford on Tuesday and accepted the standard penalty.”

But Birmingham have appealed against the red card shown to Dutch midfielder Kieftenbeld at Griffin Park.

Birmingham have appealed on the grounds of wrongful dismissal and presented video evidence which will be viewed by a Football Association Independent Regulatory Commission.

A statement on the club’s official website read: “Kieftenbeld was sent off in the 66th minute of Blues’ 1-1 draw at Brentford for alleged violent conduct.

“Referee Tim Robinson’s attention was brought to an off-the-ball-incident involving Brentford striker Neal Maupay by the fourth official.

“If Blues’ appeal is rejected, Kieftenbeld will have to serve a three-match suspension.”
