Former midfielder Paul Merson has claimed that Arsenal's transfer business during the January window suggests that they are no longer regarded as "a big fish".
Placing priority on strengthening his backline, Mikel Arteta completed deals for Flamengo's Pablo Mari and Southampton's Cedric Soares.
Despite the additions seemingly representing value for money at a time when many prices were inflated, Merson has not been left impressed with the signings.
Speaking to Sky Sports News, the Englishman said: "The main thing is, he's seen what he needs at the back. He has come in and brought two defenders in. Will they make a difference? We will have to wait and see.
"The shame for me is that it just shows where Arsenal are. They are struggling. They aren't the big fish anymore where they can go and get £50m or £60m players. They are going for players that no-one else is really after. It wasn't like they were in a bidding war."
Neither player will be involved for a number of weeks, with Mari lacking match fitness and Soares currently carrying a knee injury.
