Per Mertesacker heaps praise on Arsenal teammate Mesut Ozil, who he claims is being rewarded for all of his hard work on and off the field.

Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker has insisted that in-form teammate Mesut Ozil is "hungry" to win more trophies at the Emirates Stadium.

The Germany international has scored six goals already this season in all competitions, including a first career hat-trick in midweek to help the Gunners to a 6-0 win over Ludogorets Razgrad in the Champions League.

Mertesacker claims that Ozil's impressive start to the season has come as no surprise in the dressing room, as his compatriot is determined to work hard both on and off the field in the hunt for silverware.

"At the moment, everything seems to be coming together for him," he told the club's official website. "Look at him on Wednesday night - he assisted one and then scored three. This is a reward for all of Mesut's work and patience.

"He's hungry, he wants success and he wants to push himself. He's showing now that he can score, that he can help to lead the team. He's been vital for us this season and he can make the difference at any second. He wants to lead this club to success, and I'm very happy with his recent performances."

Three of Ozil's goals this season have come in the Premier League, but he has yet to get off the mark in terms of assists despite topping the charts last term with 19 in all.
