How Arsenal could line up against Liverpool

Sports Mole looks at how Arsenal could line up for Wednesday's EFL Cup clash with Liverpool at Anfield as Mesut Ozil pushes for a rare appearance.

Arsenal will be looking to shake off the controversy surrounding Sunday's 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace when they take on Liverpool at Anfield for a place in the EFL Cup quarter-finals on Wednesday night.

The Gunners let a two-goal lead slip at home to the Eagles before being denied a late winner by VAR, but even then the main talking point lay elsewhere.

Granit Xhaka's reaction to being booed off by his own fans has filled many column inches already, with the club captain appearing to swear at the Arsenal supporters before angrily taking his shirt off and going straight down the tunnel following his substitution.

A trip to the Premier League leaders is arguably the last thing Unai Emery's side need after that, but here Sports Mole looks at how they could line up for the contest.

Wednesday's match comes at a good time for Arsenal in the sense that it gives Emery a chance to take Xhaka out of the firing line without raising too many eyebrows, and the beleaguered club captain is expected to be one of up to 11 changes for the Gunners.

The youngsters stole the show in the previous round and many will likely be handed opportunities to shine at Anfield, including Gabriel Martinelli leading the line following his brace against Nottingham Forest.

Rob Holding and Joe Willock were also on the scoresheet in that match and will be hopeful of starting again on Wednesday, but Reiss Nelson will not have the chance to add to his third-round strike as Arsenal's only injury absentee.

Fringe players such as Shkodran Mustafi, Emiliano Martinez and Lucas Torreira could be handed rare starts, while Hector Bellerin is now fit again and available to start at right-back.

Mesut Ozil could be drafted in to provide experience in an otherwise youthful team, with the German absent from every matchday squad since the previous round of this competition.
