The Tennessee Titans announce the departure of head coach Ken Whisenhunt after a run of six straight defeats in the NFL.

The Tennessee Titans have sacked head coach Ken Whisenhunt after a stagnant run in the NFL.

The AFC South team announced Whisenhunt's departure on Tuesday morning and promoted Mike Mularkey to interim coach.

The Titans have lost six games in a row since opening the season with victory over the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and won just three of their 20 matches under Whisenhunt after agreeing a five-year contract with him before the start of last season.

"We have expected more progress on the field, and I felt it was time to move in a different direction," Titans controlling owner Amy Adams Strunk said in a statement.

"I would like to thank Ken for his efforts with our team, as he worked very hard to try to move us forward."

Up next for the Titans is a trip to the New Orleans Saints, who are 4-4, on Sunday.
