A report claims that Lyon are close to signing Pape Cheikh Diop from Celta Vigo after usurping Tottenham Hotspur to the front of the queue.

Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly missed out on the signing of Celta Vigo midfielder Pape Cheikh Diop after being outbid by Ligue 1 side Lyon.

The Lilywhites were said to be keen to land the 19-year-old, who they watched up close during Celta's recent friendlies with Brentford and Burnley.

Spurs are believed to have offered £9m for the former Spain Under-19s international, but Lyon have usurped them by offering the Sky Blues more while also tempting the player with improved personal terms.

According to the Daily Mail, however, Tottenham have yet to completely give up hope of signing Dakar-born ace Diop as they are weighing up a second bid.

Mauricio Pochettino is expected to make Davinson Sanchez his first signing of the summer in the next 24 hours after supposedly reaching an agreement with Ajax.
