Preview: Ross County vs. Kilmarnock - prediction, team news, lineups

Sports Mole previews Wednesday's Scottish Premiership clash between Ross County and Kilmarnock, including team news and predicted lineups.

Ross County will be looking to maintain their perfect start to the 2020-21 Scottish Premiership campaign when they take on Kilmarnock at Victoria Park on Wednesday evening.

The Staggies have taken six points from the first six on offer and are flying high in third, while Kilmarnock are down in eighth after failing to win so far, though they did hold champions Celtic last time out.

Match preview

Both of Ross County's victories, over Motherwell and Hamilton Academical, have come by the same 1-0 scoreline.

Indeed, after the opening two rounds of fixtures, Stuart Kettlewell's charges are the only side yet to concede a single goal.

Having won both of their opening two league games of this season, County are looking to win three straight Scottish Premiership matches for the first time since August 2017.

Ross Stewart scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot against Motherwell and Billy Mckay struck in the final 15 minutes in Saturday's win at Hamilton.

Kettlewell, who recently made headlines for his uncanny resemblance to Manchester United keeper David de Gea, has urged his players "not to sit back and relax" after their perfect start.

County have a couple of winnable home games to come in the next week, starting with this visit of winless Kilmarnock.

Killie picked up a well-earned point against Celtic on Sunday, with Chris Burke converting a penalty to cancel out Ryan Christie's early opener.

That came on the back of a 2-1 loss to Hibernian on the opening day, making it eight defeats in their last nine away league games.

This is not a fixture Killie tend to do well in, either, having won only one of their last six away league meetings with County - a 2-1 victory in March 2017.

However, taking all league games into account, Alex Dyer's men have lost just once in their last five league games against Ross County, albeit in their most recent trip to Victoria Park.

Team News

Three members of Ross County's back four made their debuts on the opening day of the season and have made a dream start with back-to-back shutouts.

Kettlewell unsurprisingly stuck with a winning formula last time out and, despite the quick turnaround in matches, that may also be the case on Wednesday.

Mckay, the matchwinner against Hamilton, has scored six of County's last eight league goals and will lead the line here.

As for Kilmarnock, goalkeeper Jake Eastwood was replaced at half time on the opening day of the season and replaced by Danny Rogers, who started against Celtic.

That should remain the case against County, while Greg Kiltie will be hoping for a recall in place of Gary Dicker.

That alteration will likely determine what shape the visitors go with, having reverted from a 4-2-3-1 against Hibernian to a 4-3-3 versus Celtic.

Ross County possible starting lineup:
Laidlaw; Randall, Donaldson, Iacovitti, Reid; Patton, Vigurs, Tilson; Erwin, Mckay, Stewart

Kilmarnock possible starting lineup:
Rogers; Millen, Broadfoot, Findlay, Waters; Power, Tshibola; Burke, Kiltie, McKenzie; Kabamba

We say: Ross County 1-0 Kilmarnock

Ross County have made an impressive start to the campaign and are seeking a third successive Scottish Premiership win for the first time in more than three years. Kilmarnock did well to hold Celtic at the weekend, but their away record is poor and we are backing a home win on Wednesday.
