Kate Garraway's husband Derek Draper starts a course of therapeutic plasma exchange in his lengthy recovery from coronavirus.

Good Morning Britain host Kate Garraway has revealed that her husband Derek Draper is now undergoing a course of receiving therapeutic plasma exchange (TPE) as he continues his recovery from coronavirus.

The 52-year-old has now been in intensive care for more than four months after a severe battle with COVID-19 that has left him with damage to his lungs, heart and other internal organs.

TPE requires people who have previously tested positive for coronavirus to donate their blood, something Garraway offered several months ago but was turned down.

"I was looking for anything that I was able to do," she said on Good Morning Britain today. "But they said we are months away from being confident enough to clean your blood."

She added: "The doctors that I was speaking to in America were doing it regularly [for months]... why were we slow to do this?"

Garraway has been previously warned that Draper faces a very lengthy period of rehabilitation and may never fully recover from his injuries.
