Newcastle United are close to agreeing an £18m deal with Benfica for Greece midfielder Andreas Samaris, according to reports.

Newcastle United have edged closer to a deal for Benfica midfielder Andreas Samaris worth £18m, according to reports.

The 28-year-old Greece international, who has two years left to run on his current deal, featured 30 times for the Eagles last season as they sealed a third successive Primeira Liga title.

According to The Sun, who in turn have quoted Greek outlets, Samaris is close to joining Newcastle after the club improved on their initial £13m offer, which was rejected.

It has also been reported that Everton continue to maintain an interest in the defensive player, despite having seen their offer of £14m turned down in early July.

Toon boss Benitez has already clinched the signings of Christian Atsu, Florian Lejeune, Javier Manquillo and Jacob Murphy this summer.
