Britain's Jonathan Brownlee crossed the finish line in 12th place on his return from injury at the World Triathlon Series Grand Final in Chicago at the weekend.

The 25-year-old, who spent three months out of action with a stress fracture, was in contention for a top finish after the 1.5km swim.

However, the Olympic bronze medallist dropped down the pack by the end of the contest in a time of 1:46.19.

"I am not normally happy with 12th, but it was an achievement to be here," Brownlee wrote on Twitter. "10km is a long way off 4 weeks of running."

Spain's Mario Mola took top spot, while Javier Gomez clinched his third successive title after a second-place finish.
