Newcastle United reportedly show an interest in signing Southampton defender Matt Targett on a loan deal.

Southampton defender Matt Targett is reportedly attracting interest from Newcastle United.

Earlier this month, the Saints announced that Targett had penned a new long-term deal at the club after coming through the academy process at St Mary's.

However, the England Under-21 international has not featured for Southampton this season and with the club out of the EFL Cup, opportunities could be limited.

According to Sky Sports News, that has led to Newcastle trying to sign the left-back on a loan deal as Rafael Benitez looks to strengthen his backline.

The Magpies have been forced to cope with injuries to both Florian Lejeune and Paul Dummett during the opening weeks of the season, and Targett would expect to gain regular first-team action should he complete a move to St James' Park.

Ryan Bertrand and Sam McQueen are also capable of playing at left-back for the Saints.
