Result: Newcastle United slip to York City defeat

Newcastle United are beaten 2-1 by League Two side York City at Bootham Crescent.

Newcastle United have slipped to a 2-1 defeat to League Two side York City at Bootham Crescent this evening.

A mistake at the back inside the first minute allowed Ayoze Perez to feed Siem de Jong on the edge of the box but his low drive was tipped around the post.

The visitors found themselves a goal down when Anthony Straker latched onto a clipped ball over the defence and his touch lofted the ball over goalkeeper Karl Darlow to leave him with an empty net to tap into.

The home side doubled their advantage when a triallist cut on from the edge of the box before curling home into the far corner.

Rolando Aarons almost reduced the deficit before the break, but his overhead attempt was straight at Scott Flinders in the York goal.

After the break, the Magpies' new £12m striker Alexandre Mitrovic could only drag his shot wide after good work from Perez.

Mitrovic should have grabbed his debut goal after the hour mark but he glanced a header wide after a teasing delivery from Shane Ferguson.

Perez marked his 22nd birthday with a goal when he reacted quickest during a goalmouth scramble to fire home 15 minutes from time.

De Jong almost levelled the score up inside the final 10 minutes, but his low effort fizzed just wide of the post.
