Manchester United identify Aston Villa goalkeeper Tom Heaton as an ideal replacement for David de Gea, according to a report.

Manchester United are reportedly contemplating a move for Aston Villa goalkeeper Tom Heaton amid uncertainty surrounding David de Gea's future.

Having lost his place as undisputed number one to Dean Henderson in recent weeks, De Gea is being heavily linked with a move away from Old Trafford this summer.

Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid have both been credited with an interest in De Gea, and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is already thought to be eyeing replacements for the Spaniard.

Jan Oblak, Hugo Lloris and Mike Maignan have all been mentioned, but the Daily Star reports that Solskjaer is keen to bring Heaton to the club, with a move for West Bromwich Albion's Sam Johnstone apparently dead in the water.

Heaton spent six years at Old Trafford but failed to make a single appearance for the first team before leaving for Cardiff City in 2010, and the 35-year-old would supposedly be happy to act as United's second-choice goalkeeper as Lee Grant and Sergio Romero also prepare to leave.

Heaton has not made a single first-team appearance for Aston Villa this season, although he has turned out four times for the Under-23s since recovering from a cruciate ligament injury.
