Jose Mourinho insists that Manchester United's unbeaten start to the season counts for little at this stage, as there is still a long way to go in the title race.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has insisted that it is still too early in the season to determine whether his side have what it takes to last the distance in the title race.

The Red Devils did well to grind out a 1-0 victory away at Southampton on Saturday afternoon, making it five wins and a draw from their first six top-flight outings.

Despite his side sitting comfortably alongside Manchester City on 16 points at the summit, Mourinho was eager to cool talk of a two-way battle for the title, as he believes that as many as six teams are likely to compete at the top.

"It's too early. I know that last season on this fixture I think we would have, maybe, five or six points less than we have this season," he told reporters. "So we are better this season than last. But this is nothing.

"It's just a start. A difficult period with an accumulation of matches that comes in October. Difficult. I really think that six teams are going to fight for the title."

Champions Chelsea are two points further back on 13, while Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool have 11 points apiece after six games.
