Is Raheem Sterling set for a move to Real Madrid this summer?

Although Raheem Sterling has been in excellent form for Manchester City throughout the 2017-18 season, it seems as though the England international could be set for a high-profile transfer this summer.

This is because there have been frequent reports that Real Madrid have their sights set on snapping up the in-demand winger. Zinedine Zidane has reportedly expressed an interest in signing Sterling to the Spanish side in order to boost their attacking strength in what's been a relatively lacklustre season.

What's making this story gain a degree of credibility is the fact that Sterling has yet to enter formal talks with Manchester City for when his contract runs out in two years. It seems that the board at the Etihad Stadium appear to be unwilling to offer Sterling anything in the way of better terms, and so it suggests that Sterling might jump at the chance to play for the legendary Spanish side.

Such a move would be a brutal blow for City's boss, Pep Guardiola, who has repeatedly praised Sterling's goal-scoring talents - 20 goals in total for the Premier League leaders. While Guardiola would be unwilling to lose Sterling, it also emerged that Sterling could have been part of the failed deal that tried to move Alexis Sanchez from Manchester City to Arsenal last year.

Thankfully the 23-year old star has enjoyed a great season at the Etihad and it's no surprise that many player profiles of Sterling have noted how his recent switch to a more central position has worked wonders in helping him become a fixture in Guardiola's team.

But despite Sterling's strong recent form, it seems that Guardiola is keen to have a shakeup of the Manchester City team in the summer transfer period. It's already been noted how the French star Kylian Mbappe could be in line for a move to Etihad in the coming months, and it would be interesting to see how these two flamboyant stars play alongside each other.

Sterling suffered a nasty hamstring injury against Basel last month, and he will be disappointed to miss out on the chance of improving his excellent scoring record in order to improve his chances with the Manchester City board.

Even if Real Madrid don't attempt to make an offer for Sterling, it seems that there are plenty of other top teams who are lining up to give the England international star a new home. In particular, Chelsea have expressed an interest in Sterling, although it seems as though this offer would be dependent on Eden Hazard making a move from Stamford Bridge to Real Madrid.

Regardless of what happens in the boardroom, it's evident that Sterling's impressive form at Manchester City has been pivotal in helping Guardiola get very close to picking up his first Premier League title - and if Sterling keeps up his remarkable goalscoring record, it's only going to make him all the more attractive to Real Madrid.
