Everton manager Ronald Koeman says that he will deploy Wayne Rooney in a number of positions next season.

Everton manager Ronald Koeman has revealed that he has an open mind on where he will play Wayne Rooney this season following the striker's return to Goodison Park.

The 31-year-old sealed a return to his boyhood side yesterday following a 13-year stint at Manchester United, having been used sparingly by the Red Devils last season.

Rooney has admitted that getting regular game time was a key factor in his decision to leave Old Trafford but said that he will "wait and see" how he is deployed by Koeman on the pitch.

"The big thing was coming back here to play," he told reporters. "Then the manager will assess the training sessions and make his decision from there."

Koeman added: "Everybody knows the qualities of Wayne. He's really that striker to play with that character. Offensively he can be a 10 behind the striker, in a free role from the left, a nine, a seven... that's the position where Wayne will play."

During his time at United, Rooney became the club's all-time leading goalscorer, with 253 in 559 appearances.
