Mark Cavendish in contention for first Olympic medal

Mark Cavendish finishes fifth in the time trial event to move up to second overall in the Rio 2016 men's omnium, with two events left to go.

Great Britain's Mark Cavendish remains firmly in the hunt for a place on the podium in the Rio 2016 men's omnium.

The 31-year-old, who has never previously won an Olympic medal, finds himself tied for second heading into the final two events.

Cavendish finished fifth in the time trial to climb into a silver-medal placing, having been down in third after Sunday's opening trio of events.

Thomas Boudat of France, who claimed 10th place in the time trial, is currently locked on points with Cavendish, while Italy's Elia Viviani is the man in front with a 14-point lead.

The omnium cycling is due to finish on Monday evening, with two events remaining - the flying lap and the points race.
