Romelu Lukaku's record vs. Chelsea

Ahead of Manchester United welcoming Chelsea to Old Trafford on Sunday, Sports Mole looks at Romelu Lukaku's previous record against his former club.

Romelu Lukaku will return to one of his former clubs on Sunday when Manchester United host top-four rivals Chelsea in the pick of the Premier League ties this weekend.

Manager Jose Mourinho will also be welcoming his old employers to Old Trafford, but on the field United will be hoping that Lukaku is able to up his game against the reigning champions following his improved scoring form of late.

The Belgian has often been accused of being a flat-track bully, though, failing to score against the big teams in the big games while improving his stats against supposedly easier opposition.

Here, Sports Mole looks at Lukaku's past record against Chelsea during his time with Everton and Manchester United.

Lukaku vs. Chelsea

It wasn't until the 2014-15 campaign that Lukaku first played against Chelsea, and that was a memorable encounter too as the Toffees fell to a 6-3 defeat at Goodison Park - although Lukaku failed to score any of the nine goals.

Indeed, the Belgian striker has never found the back of the net in six previous Premier League meetings with his former club, notching both of his goals against Chelsea in an FA Cup quarter-final clash in 2016 - a game Everton won 2-0 at Goodison.

Everton also beat Chelsea at home in the league that season for Lukaku's only other previous win against the West Londoners, who have won five of the six league matches in which Lukaku has been on the opposing team.

Indeed, neither Lukaku nor his team have managed a goal in the past three meetings with Chelsea, with Everton losing both games last season by an aggregate scoreline of 8-0 and Manchester United falling to a 1-0 defeat at Stamford Bridge earlier this term.

The forward has failed to register an assist in any of his previous eight meetings with the Blues either, so he will be desperate to end a pretty woeful record against the club who deemed him not good enough for their starting lineup.
