Former Bulgarian international Trifon Ivanov dies, aged 50

Former Bulgaria international Trifon Ivanov, who represented his country at the 1994 World Cup and Euro 96, passes away at the age of 50.

The Bulgarian Football Union has announced that former international defender Trifon Ivanov has passed away at the age of 50.

Ivanov, who won a total of 77 caps for his country, helped Bulgaria reach the semi-finals of the 1994 World Cup, while he also appeared at Euro 1996.

A statement read: "Trifon Ivanov will remain in the history of Bulgarian football as one of the best defenders.

"Before being a great player, Trifon was a great man with great heart and always ready to help.

"We all mourn the loss of a true friend. Rest in peace, Trifon."

Ivanov, who retired from professional football in 2001, spent time at the likes of CSKA Sofia, Real Betis and Rapid Vienna during his career.
